Quansheng UV-K5(8)
>> Now in Stock
The UV-K5(8) is a dual band (144 / 430 MHz ) transceiver with additional (non-contiguous) RX coverage in various bands from 50 Mhz through 600 MHz.
Out of the box, the UV-K5(8) is typical of a number of dual band HTs. What stands it apart is the re-writeable firmware memory, that has allowed 3rd party enhancements and additions to the operating software.
The UV-K5(8) is designed to transmit on 144 and 430 MHz bands; it has filters for these bands to ensure adequate harmonic and spurie suppression.
A number of Amateurs have created modifications to the firmware that have transformed the radio massively. Some examples of mods / updates:
- introduce "long press" of keyboard keys to activate functions instead of having to press the function key followed by a second key
- increase the RX range from 18MHz through 1300MHz ( discontinuous to exclude cellular ) to the maximum range of the BK4819 radio chip used in this radio
- spectrum display centered around selected freq
- full width "S" meter with dB indication
- Add "SSB" reception and improve "AM" quality
- frequency shifting to compensate for doppler effect for satellite communications
- text messaging between UV-K5 radios
- upsize eeprom ( hardware mod required ) in conjunction with supporting firmware to increase channels numbers to 1,000
- and many more!
Note: Owing to the numerous feature additions available, not all additional features can be installed in a radio (owing to a size limitation of the radio's program memory) . Producers of custom firmware might make several versions - each with a different combination of features. Some firmware forks allow the end user to select features and a firmware will be compiled on that basis.
Firmware updating requires a programming cable ( the same type that is used to perform PC based channel configurations ), and is typically performed from a web page; with no experience in installing firmware required.
The UV-K5 is supported by the popular "Chirp" configuration software. Some custom firmware versions require a firmware specific "driver" to be installed in Chirp.
One popular firmware fork is "F4HWN". F4HWN is a continuing development of the originally popular "Egzumer" fork. Start here to see what is possible with this radio!
