The UV-K5(8) is a dual band (144 / 430 MHz ) transceiver with additional (non-contiguous) RX coverage in various bands from 50 Mhz through 600 MHz.
Out of the box, the UV-K5(8) is typical of a number of dual band HTs. What stands it apart is the re-writeable firmware memory, that has allowed 3rd party enhancements and additions to the operating software. A number of Amateurs have created modifications to the firmware that have transformed the radio massively. Some examples of mods / updates: increasing the RX range from 18MHz through 1300MHz ( discontinuous to exclude cellular ) as maximum range of the BK4819 radio chip used in this radio, spectrum display centered around selected freq, full width "S" meter with dB indication - and many more!
